Good evening everyone. Welcome to my author chat. Happy Valentines day! Please adhere to the rules listed at the top of the page and feel free to ask a question whenever you are ready.

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:04 pm
happy valentines day

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:04 pm
Happy Valentines Day Bill!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:04 pm
Welcome

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:04 pm
So you of all people should have some interesting questions… being a beta reader.

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:05 pm
Nancy is sitting this one out today she is a bit of a luddite when it comes to chatting. she would rather voice or f2f than anything else.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:05 pm
I might do a face to face down the road. I wanted to see how this went. What kind of turn up I would get.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:05 pm
But tell her I said hello regardless

Guest_378
February 14, 2013 – 8:06 pm
it don’t like my name

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:06 pm
So, what kind of questions do you and Nancy have for me?

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:06 pm
well we are wondering about the Steel Van Man… can you keep that kind of energy up throughout the entire book and how are you going to decompress the reader toward the end

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:06 pm
Hellp Guest_378. You can change your name at the bottom of the screen above the “text typing” box

Guest_378
February 14, 2013 – 8:07 pm
ok for some reason i can’t put my name in

Guest_378
February 14, 2013 – 8:07 pm
it keeps telling me profanity lol

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:07 pm
Just type over where you see the grey words “Guest_378” then type.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:07 pm
Well, the Steel Van Man is an interesting book… as it keeps me wondering as much as I hope it will keep the reader wondering

Michele G
February 14, 2013 – 8:08 pm
urghhhhhhh

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:08 pm
I find it taking twists and turns where I least expect it. Which can be a good thing because as it stands, I now have three different potential killers… so I’m curious who the readers feel will be the real killer.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:08 pm
Hello Michelle Welcome

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:09 pm
Hello Cheleliche.

Michele G
February 14, 2013 – 8:09 pm
ya it told me my name was profanity lol

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:09 pm
Oh, that was you Michele!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:09 pm
That’s funny

Michele G
February 14, 2013 – 8:09 pm
yes lol

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:10 pm
Bill, when it comes to decompressing the reader, the decompression is a slow process… and is coming as the characters are also being developed.

Michele G
February 14, 2013 – 8:10 pm
i just popped in to say hey Jay

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:10 pm
As I said before in past messages that being dyslexic when i read a book if it is a good story it becomes a movie in my mind and the picture that I got was basically a head hooked up to an ECMO and heart lung machine missing a body… pretty intense for the first part of a chapter

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:11 pm
Don’t forget, I intend to make people actually sympathize with the killer in the end… which leads into a sequel possibly.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:11 pm
Yes. That does tone down a little, but the action picks up. It’s definitely a throw into the deep end of the pool right out of chapter one.

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:11 pm
I’ll have to keep reading as it goes on then

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:12 pm
Yes. You’ll enjoy it I think. It’s VERY different from The Ter’roc: Evolution

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:12 pm
Ok

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:12 pm
How have you both been enjoying the Ter’roc?

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:15 pm
lately we havent been able to really do more than skim the newest version… tight life things here going on but from what I have been able to read lately the flow is good, you paint a great picture of life before

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:16 pm
I’m hitting the wrong keys again

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:16 pm
That’s no problem, I understand how things can get. I’m glad it’s going well so far. As I said, the version that’s out there is pretty much the final version that is now in my editor’s hand.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:17 pm
I may add a few little things here and there, but I don’t plan on much other than restructuring to smooth it out along with any grammatical changes Nancy or any other Beta readers feel are needed.

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:17 pm
good, Nancy says you got her thumbs up on the grammer and spelling so that is a good thing.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:17 pm
no problem on hitting the wrong keys. I’m still getting used to this chat plugin.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:17 pm
Wow! That’s high praise coming from her.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:18 pm
I am noticing that the more I work (especially on the novel side of things) it’s getting easier for me to spot things AS I write…

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:19 pm
We are getting ready to go into training for home dialysis on this end which after things get settled gives her a chance to read larger format print in a more relaxed surrounding…. and maybe ill get back on schedule.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:19 pm
That sounds good.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:20 pm
Not the dialysis part. but things calming down.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:20 pm
I hope everything goes smoothly with the training.

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:21 pm
I hate to admit it but some of the best writing that I have ever done in college was done through speach recognition software and proof reading from time to time then self editing it… or having the grammer **** give it a work over… we used to rip up each others papers but always got A grades with that process

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:21 pm
Hey, Just for the record, I really appreciate how dedicated you and Nancy have been since Ruins of the Mind came out. It means a lot to me that people enjoy my writing. Keeps me going.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:22 pm
Ha!

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:22 pm
believe me the dialysis part is good news no more erly mornings taking half a day to get through it

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:22 pm
I’ve actually never tried speech recognition software. I suppose it would be handy to try out.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:22 pm
There’s just something I enjoy about typing with my fingers though.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:22 pm
Oh, that is good news then.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:23 pm
Hello Guest_438. You can change your name by selecting the grey “Guest_438” at the bottom and giving it a different name. Then type a message and hit enter.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:23 pm
Good evening Doug. Glad you could make it

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:23 pm
Good to know.

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:24 pm
Not sure how long I can stay. Dinner is nearly ready.

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:24 pm

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:24 pm
for some reason we like your style of writing… my favorite authors are Clive Cussler, Stephen King, Robin Cook, O S Card and Dean Koontz… so pretty eclectic

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:24 pm
So, Bill was just asking me questions about The Steel Van Man. Feel free to scroll up to read what we were chatting about.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:24 pm
Steven King, Orson Scott, Koontz…those are some of my favorites….

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:25 pm
Card? I love the Ender books!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:25 pm
So I think I always tend to drive my style toward them. But I enjoy playing with dialog a lot too… I have never been one that likes to go deep into what’s going through a guys head for 12 pages.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:25 pm
Ender is AWESOME

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:25 pm
Ho Ender

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:25 pm
Ho Jason!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:26 pm
Ender’s Game style is what I used to put in the Draklor discussions at the beginning of some of the chapters

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:27 pm
ie. Having a different font without saying who is talking… and having the two draklor discussing things about the horrible things they have done.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:27 pm
So Doug, what questions can I answer for you?

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:28 pm
We have three minutes left, but if I go a little over I’m not complaining.

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:28 pm
Oh gee, I was supposed to have questions, wasn;t I?

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:28 pm
Ender was a great way to show how to develop a character during the first book and fill him out as he grows and goes into different situations. The one thing I dont like is when an author uses the same technique and methods for a given character.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:28 pm
Ha!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:28 pm
Like Odd Thomas?

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:29 pm
Agree with ya, Bill… I also like that he wrote a story around kids, but it wasn’t YA.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:29 pm
I believe that a book and story need to grow as well as the character. There should be more depth building in the character especially if it’s a series

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:29 pm
those were some very advanced kids

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:29 pm
True.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:29 pm
True.

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:30 pm
so Jason make me have empathy for the Steel Van Man

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:31 pm
Well, now that is the trick isn’t it. The truth is, I need to get myself to feel empathy for him.

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:31 pm
remember my back ground is in law enforcement and special warfare irl

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:31 pm
first

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:31 pm
Right. And… given who the SVM actually is, I’m going to be picking your brain offline…

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:31 pm
CINDY-LEE!!!

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:31 pm
Hello!

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:32 pm
ok your welcome to what is left

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:32 pm
The SVM is a killer who has a family of killers going back generations.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:32 pm
Hello Cindy-Lee

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:32 pm

Doug_D

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:32 pm
Hello Jason, nice to meet you. I am a friend of Doug’s and would love to check out a new author!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:32 pm
Yes. But the SVM is the first person with Morals and family values. So he’s sort of trapped between two worlds.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:33 pm
Nice to meet you as well. I welcome it.

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:33 pm
now you have my interest at least

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:33 pm
Keep in mind, his M.O. has him killing ALWAYS a set of parents that is badly abusing children.

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:34 pm
Jason, you work a full time day job as well as writing?

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:34 pm
Which is unlike his mother and grandfather’s… in that they were not selective about who they killed, just how they did it.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:34 pm
Doug, yes – I’m a Network Administrator full-time

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:34 pm
but home to write fulltime some day.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:34 pm
*hope to write fulltime

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:35 pm
so a killer with ethics and a family history of being artistic about their “craft

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:35 pm
I have to go… Dinner.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:35 pm
Cindy-Lee, did you have a chance to read the first chapter of the Steel Van Man yet here on my site?

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:35 pm
Thank you for popping in Doug! Happy Valentines day

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:35 pm
No, I was just going to ask where I should start!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:35 pm
Yes. Exactly Bill

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:35 pm

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:36 pm
Thanks everyone… See you all later.

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:36 pm
Talk to you after Doug!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:36 pm
You may ask anything you’d like Cindy-Lee.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:36 pm
We’ve mostly been discussing The Steel Van Man which is a novel I’m working on.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:37 pm
Night Doug

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:37 pm
How many books have you released?

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:37 pm
There’s basic for you!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:37 pm
I’ve released one: Ruins of the Mind: An Anthology

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:38 pm
But I have on novel finished in editing (which Bill here is a Beta reader of) and I have three other books I’m about half way finished with.

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:38 pm
Then that’s the best place for me to start then

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:38 pm
Absolutely.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:39 pm
You’re getting in at the ground level, so you have a chance to see this all grow as it comes along.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:39 pm
Do you live near Doug?

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:39 pm
I know the Beehive carries Ruins of the Mind

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:39 pm
but you can also get it on Amazon.com

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:39 pm
I am in Alberta Canada

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:39 pm
oh, then Amazon.com is your best bet.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:40 pm
Although any local bookstore can order it as well.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:41 pm
I’m hoping to release The Ter’roc: Evolution (which is an expansion of one of the short stories in Ruins of the Mind) in September or October this year, followed by The Steel Van Man probably by Thanksgiving.

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:41 pm
I will check Amazon for sure. Is it available for Kindle?

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:41 pm
Just in time for Christmas. I’m sure that all everyone wants under their tree – A serial killer

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:41 pm
Yes it is.

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:42 pm
American Thanksgiving, of course… so later than it should be

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:42 pm

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:42 pm
When is Canada’s?

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:42 pm
October.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:42 pm
That’s what I thought. But I wasn’t sure

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:43 pm
Well everyone, unless anyone has any more questions – I think I will be closing this chat.

Bill K
February 14, 2013 – 8:43 pm

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:44 pm
Sorry I came in so late, but I clicked on Doug’s link….very nice to meet you, and I will definitely share my thoughts when I read your book…I am kind of like that!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:44 pm
I would LOVE that! I always love hearing from my readers. Can’t be a good writer unless I get feedback from those who read it. Right?

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:45 pm
I’ll be happy to stick around a few minutes if I can answer any other questions you might have. They can be anything.

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:45 pm
And, if I do say so myself, I write a pretty decent review. I have a blog I write, as I don’t have the patience to write a whole book. I need instant feedback!

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:46 pm
I would be happy to post a link on my site to yours, if you’d like.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:46 pm
Oh? You’ll have to send me a link for it. You may always reach me at jp@pstadtlander.com

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:46 pm
I would be happy to – yes.

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:46 pm
Awesome!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:46 pm
Have you ever read my blog?

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:47 pm
To be honest, I only heard your name for the first time the other day when Doug and I were talking about his short story, so I am very new!

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:47 pm
I will though!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:48 pm
I do a regular piece called “Twisted Thursday” which focuses on the ridiculousness of our society. Today’s was called “Technological Overcompensation for the Inadequacies of Lazy People”: http://www.jasonpstadtlander.com/twisted-thursday-technological-overcompensation-inadequacies-lazy-people/

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:48 pm
Very interesting!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:48 pm
Well, I am glad to have a new reader! Always! And I would love to read your blog and comment on it.

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:49 pm
That would make me very happy! http://www.cindysamuel.com

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:49 pm

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:49 pm
Oh very much so!

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:49 pm

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:50 pm

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:50 pm
When there isn’t much of it, it doesn’t take long to eat.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:50 pm
You’d get a chance to read my books as they come together long before they go to press. But ONLY if you promise to give me constant feedback – Unlike Doug

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:50 pm
*teasing*

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:50 pm

Cindy-Lee

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:52 pm

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:53 pm
Good eye for detail.

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:54 pm
Done!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:54 pm
Well I look forward to your input. Keep one thing in mind as a beta reader… you’re reading literally the RAW stuff, very little editing. So if you spot things like grammatical errors, structuring issues or fact inconsistencies, don’t hesitate to let me know. I provide the books in Kindle – Word (with track changes) and PDF… so you can mark things up and email them back to me.

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:54 pm
That’s perfect!

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:55 pm
What, no epub?

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:56 pm
No, not initially anyway. Or was that sarcasm?

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:56 pm
A little of both.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:56 pm
LOL

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:57 pm
I would have guessed sarcasm, knowing Doug!

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:57 pm
Well, I think I’m going to close the chat. So thank you both very much for being a part of this. It means a lot to me!

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:57 pm
I am glad Doug mentioned it!

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:57 pm
Always happy to chat.

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:57 pm
oh, very quickly… Did Doug tell you that he is making a guest appearance in my new novel?

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:57 pm
*BLUSH*

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:58 pm
hmmmmm I don’t think he did…but how freaking cool is that!?

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:58 pm
Very…

Jason P. Stadtlander
February 14, 2013 – 8:58 pm
Would you… both like to read his scene?

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:58 pm
I am in one of CJ West’s books…

Cindy-Lee
February 14, 2013 – 8:58 pm
Yes!!!

Doug_D
February 14, 2013 – 8:59 pm
Is a frog’s **** water-tight?

Okay here is the Scene. Let’s see if it will let me paste the whole thing in here. Keep in mind, before I paste it. The character Iton is actually one of the ancient aliens in human form… and the cover on Doug’s book is actually that of the novel that’s written in.

October 6th, 1:32pm – Delaware, Ohio – Beehive Bookstore Shannon sat at a table in the café talking to Iton who was in his human form, a man in his mid-forties with light brown hair and a five o’clock shadow. He was explaining that pyramids built by the Egyptians, Incas, Aztecs, Mayans, Babylonians, Aborigines and about forty other tribes and ancient civilizations had a higher purpose. That they had actually been built to help support the new defense shield that was planned since the creation of mankind. Unbeknownst to all of those who built them, they had included certain materials within the structures that helped to act as a psionic resonator. Shannon glanced around the quaint bookstore trying to regain her grasp on reality in this surreal project. A man with brown hair sat in a large armchair reading a yellow book with an alien face on it in black. A woman stood talking to the owner of the bookstore, a small sprited woman who Iton had introduced as Linda Diamond, Shannon had immediately liked her. The bookstore was exactly the kind of place that Shannon enjoyed hanging out in back in Sheffield and reminded her of The Rude Shipyard on Abbeydale Road, the primary difference there being that you could grab a Guinness along with your favorite read. The woman was complaining that the bookstore couldn’t order a special book by Doug Dutcher that she had wanted. “I really am sorry, but the book just hasn’t made it to the book distributers yet. I promise as soon as it’s available, I will get it.” “That’s not good enough.” The woman said curtly. “Can I help?” the man with the yellow book asked. “I doubt it, just mind your own business.” The customer stated. “Actually, this is my business.” He said, standing up and walking over. “You see, I wrote that book.” “Oh my goodness! You’re Doug Dutcher?” the woman said, with an instant change in demeanor. “Tell you what, I will personally get you a copy from my first print which arrives next Wednesday.” “Oh my! Thank you so much!” Linda Diamond had a big smile on her face, which Shannon shared as well. Shannon looked back toward Iton who had a casual flat look on his face. “Humans.” He said shaking his head and the two looked back toward the plans he had laid out. Although there were three giant structures that needed to be built, the more daunting task was having to uncover hundreds of structures that had already been built but were covered by sand, jungle or other overgrowth. Shannon would be assigned a team dedicated to uncovering those strutures. “What if there is damage in them?” “Well, then we need to assess the damage and repair them.” Iton replied “Recht one has its work cut out for them.” Shannon said sighing.

So it should be more like: “Oh my goodness! You’re Doug Dutcher?” the woman said, with an instant change in demeanor. “Tell you what, I would have given you a copy when they come in off the press next Wednesday, but given what a pain you are to Linda Diamond, you can wait along with everyone else.”
