The Next Big Thing

The Next Best ThingI found out this week that I was tagged by Humorist and Author Carol E. Wyer. I flipped out, screamed and jumped up and down! Until I realized that she wasn’t taunting me and calling me names. Then I took a breath and thought “You know Jason? (that’s what I call myself… Jason.) People ask me as well, what I am writing about. This might be just the opportunity to discuss it.” That, and dance a little dance with the foxy Mrs. Wyer.

So, here we go!

What is the working title of your book?

I’m currently working on three novels, yes I know… it’s crazy. But for the purpose of The Next Big Thing, I’ll concentrate on the one that I’m planning to release first which is “The Ter’roc”.

Where did the idea come from for the book?

The idea came from a short story I wrote that is included in Ruins of the Mind. It also is called “The Ter’roc”. Originally when I started writing the story, I intended for it to be a very short little story about a single alien life form that had existed under Swampscott, Massachusetts for the last several thousand years. In my mind it was centipede-like. Somehow, it quickly evolved into something much more complex and interesting.

What genre does your book fall under?

I would call it generally Sci-Fi, but there is a lot of historical fiction in it as well. The book discusses possible ways that the pyramids were built, they way the Mayans and Aztec people studied the stars, Stonehenge and much more. In fact I have been working with historians, archaeologists, anthropologists and astronomers from some of the world’s top universities to get my facts straight.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Well, I have several lead characters in my book. Ranash the first head alien in the book, I have pictured being played by Dame Jude Dench; I see Shawn being played by Elle Fanning and she posses a great talent for character and Har’loc being played by Morgan Freeman, he is respectable, wise and a very versatile actor (that only names three of the seven leading characters, but you get the idea and I don’t want to spoil things).

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

A teenage girl finds a secret under her town that has lay dormant for tens of thousands of years and will change the way we see ourselves forever.

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

I am currently seeking an agent to represent the book and present it to publishers as this very well may be a series.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Currently I am 3/4 complete on the first draft. So when all is said and done, I will have spent about four months actually creating the book and I will probably spend another couple of months editing it before I release it to an agency.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

To be completely honest, I have not yet seen any books that go into this level of detail and historical fiction on this topic. So I can’t really give a good comparison. Generally I would compare some of my work to Orson Scott Card, Dean Koontz or perhaps John Saul.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

For a long time I’ve heard people theorize about ancient aliens and how they might have helped us along the way, so I decided to collect a lot of these ideas into one theme and take things a few steps further as well.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

The book not only delves deep into the idea of how various ancient civilizations may have existed and come about with some of their ideas, it adds a level of “humanity” to an alien civilization that could have existed around us for millenia without our knowledge. It touches on philosophical and moral issues while also investigating historical and science fiction facets as well, all the while maintaining characters you’ll love and feel for.

I would like to tag five amazing authors who will be names on the horizon to look for, get excited about and enjoy:

Joanna Lee Doster – An amazing thriller and young adult author.
